How We Are Free From Sin

This meditation is based on a passage for February 28, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Romans 6:3-14

Reflection and Question: Paul knows the weakness in his argument in Romans: the simple fact that we still sin after we embrace Jesus in faith. This passage is one of his many attempts in Romans to explain how law exposes sin, and grace erases sin. The primary obstacle to our understanding is a presumption that life is a line along which sin comes first, then Jesus, then Grace. Instead life is merely a collection of moments in which sin, Christ and Grace are all present all the time. Our job is to grasp Christ every time in order to know Grace. When have you presented yourself to God as an instrument of righteousness?

Prayer: Most loving Jesus, we so want to consider ourselves dead to sin and alive with You before God, and yet we confess we yield to temptation all the time. Do not let sin have dominion over us, but rather walk in newness of life with us. Amen.
